The Italian language is derived from colloquial Latin and was originally used only by ordinary citizens. Dante Alighieri's "Divine Comedy" was the first work of literature written in Italian. It is worth noting that over the past 7 centuries, literary language has hardly changed in spelling or pronunciation.
